Sasha Cooke, Mezzo-Soprano / Nathan Gunn, Baritone
Orpheus launches its fortieth season with Rossini’s mischievous Overture to L’Italiana in Algeri, a favorite from the orchestra’s catalog of recordings. The festivities continue with a world premiere by Augusta Read Thomas, commissioned in honor of the centenary of Gustav Mahler’s death. Earth Echoes, says the composer, “celebrates Earth’s continual revitalization and renewal.” Mirroring Mahler’s final vocal composition, The Song of the Earth, Thomas’ new score features two soloists: mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke and baritone Nathan Gunn, both in their debut appearances with Orpheus. The program concludes with the orchestra’s first ever performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, marking an historic expansion of the Orpheus repertoire.
