MOZART Ballet Music from Idomeneo
STRAUSS Concerto for Oboe in D major
STRAVINSKY Eight Instrumental Miniatures
MOZART Symphony No. 36 in C major "Linz"
When the acclaimed Berlin Philharmonic tunes at the beginning of a concert—it is to the sound of Albrecht Mayer’s oboe. He is, quite simply, “The most famous oboist in the world – damn good” (Rheinische Post). We play with Mayer on Strauss’ unabashedly romantic and notoriously difficult oboe concerto. Strauss’ concerto is set against Stravinsky’s lesser-known masterwork, Eight Instrumental Miniatures, an early fruit of his Neo-classical period. These works are surrounded by the Classical mastery of Mozart’s Idomeneo and his “Linz” Symphony. Program Notes

About Albrecht Meyer:

NY Times Article: "Among Oboists, a Mutual Admiration Society" 12/3/09

In demand internationally, Albrecht Mayer has succeeded like no other in rescuing the oboe from the sidelines of the orchestra pit, already having been awarded the Echo Klassik prize for his colorful and versatile discography. His playing is characterized by a particularly warm sound, vocalistic phrasing and a compelling multifariousness. Beginning his career in 1990 as solo oboist with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, he received an offer from the Berlin Philharmonic only two years later. Ever since, Albrecht has worked internationally as a soloist. He is particularly fascinated by the idea of transcribing vocal works or pieces for other instruments to lend them the voice of the oboe. He released Lieder ohne Worte – Bach-Transkriptionen für Oboe und Orchester at the end of August 2003, an album that instantly reached the number two spot in the German classical music charts.

Notes on a trip through Austria...

"I love cuisine from around the world, and, traveling with Orpheus in Europe and Asia, I am frequently able to indulge my wide-ranging tastes. But there is one food that I absolutely must have whenever I can, and that is the knödel—a delicious, tennis-ball size dumpling that is unique to the Austrian cooking tradition. This craving for knödel is perhaps a last vestige of my Austrian roots. As a matter of fact, it has been one of my “missions” to find the best knödel money can buy—and I am still hunting.... I remember a tour to Austria in which I dragged my Orpheus viola colleague Nardo Poy to a regular feast of potato knödel served with martinigansl, a scrumptious goose dish native to Burgenland, with some Blaufränkisch wine to wash it down. It was absolutely delicious, and I converted him into a real knödel lover. However, when eating a knödel (or four), it’s best to take the rest of the day off for a long nap—instead of rushing off to play a two-hour orchestra concert. Ever since, I have scheduled my taste-testing excursions after concerts, which just means that there is more time to savor the knödel—so, all is well."
